What the US AQI Bands Mean for Pakistani Cities

A practical guide to reading AQI 0–500: what PM2.5 levels mean for exercise, children, and when to mask up in Lahore and Karachi.

Why AQI, not raw PM2.5?

The US AQI converts pollutant concentrations into one 0–500 scale so a single number can drive decisions. Weather Tomorrow shows the US AQI because its breakpoints are the most widely studied for health outcomes.

The bands

  1. 0–50 Good — air poses little or no risk.
  2. 51–100 Moderate — unusually sensitive people should consider reducing prolonged exertion.
  3. 101–150 Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups — children, older adults, and people with asthma should cut back outdoor activity.
  4. 151–200 Unhealthy — everyone may begin to experience effects; sensitive groups more serious ones.
  5. 201–300 Very Unhealthy — health alert; avoid outdoor exertion.
  6. 301+ Hazardous — emergency conditions.

Lahore's smog season

From late October to February, temperature inversions trap emissions over the Punjab plain and AQI readings above 300 are common at dawn. The cleanest window is usually mid-afternoon, when mixing height peaks — schedule outdoor exercise then, and use well-fitted N95 masks during the morning peak.
